Scientific Diplomacy at Work: ItaCham and LIRA Host an Exclusive Session on AI and Cultural Heritage

In a collaboration between ItaCham, and the League of International Relations Affairs (LIRA), a dynamic youth-led organization, a sharing session on scientific diplomacy took place at AmCam Exchange. This initiative aimed to foster dialogue on the intersection of science, technology, and international cooperation in the preservation of cultural heritage.

The session featured a distinguished speaker from the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), one of Italy’s leading research institutions, who presented on the topic: “International Collaborations for Protecting and Preserving Cultural Heritage: Leveraging Remote Sensing and Artificial Intelligence to Monitor Archaeological Sites.” Also, Dr. Riccardo Corrado, from CamEd Business School, discussed the concept of Scientific Diplomacy, the role for supporting Cambodia’s development, and possible mechanisms for enabling indigenous success stories.

Cultural heritage sites, including Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and other archaeological treasures, face numerous threats—from natural degradation to human-induced damage. Dr. Giulio Poggi highlighted how cutting-edge technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Remote Sensing, are transforming the way we monitor and protect these invaluable sites.

Key takeaways from the session included the role of AI in analyzing satellite imagery and detecting potential risks to heritage sites, how remote sensing technologies enable non-invasive monitoring, reducing the need for physical intervention, and a few case studies from international collaborations that demonstrate the successful application of AI in cultural conservation. Additionally, it was highlighted the importance of cross-border partnerships in advancing technological solutions for heritage protection.

Italy and Cambodia share a strong commitment to cultural heritage conservation, evident in multiple joint projects over the years. This session reaffirmed the critical role of scientific diplomacy in fostering international partnerships—where knowledge exchange and technological advancements contribute to sustainable heritage preservation.

As ItaCham, we are proud to facilitate such initiatives that bridge business, science, and cultural diplomacy, reinforcing Italy’s role as a key partner in Cambodia’s development.

Finally, this session marks just the beginning of a broader effort to explore new frontiers in scientific collaboration. ItaCham will continue to support engagements that connect academia, business, and policy, ensuring that scientific advancements lead to real-world impact.

A special thank you to our partners at LIRA, AmCam Exchange, and the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia for making this event a success, as well as to all participants who contributed to a thought-provoking discussion. And of course, to Dr. Giulio Poggi and Dr. Arianna Traviglia for enabling this sharing session. A final thanks also to Dr. Anilkumar Dave for the continuous support.

Stay tuned for more initiatives that bring innovation and diplomacy together.
