Today, ItaCham’s Board had the pleasure to meet LCT Oknha Chhay Sivlin, President of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA).
The pleasant discussion revolved around the opportunities of collaboration to mutually support and benefit Cambodia and Italy. Both countries in fact, greatly value the tourism sector and its role not only for the economy, but also for promoting the national identity and as a form of soft power. Yet, both could attract a large numbers of tourists from each others, with Italy partially suffering from the shadow of its neighbor France benefitting from a long recent history with Cambodia and a larger awareness as a tourist destination, and Cambodia, suffering from the presence of Thailand and Vietnam where the Italian community is larger and currently with a stronger presence in terms of investments.
But as mentioned in a meeting, where there is a challenge, there is an opportunity. CATA and ItaCham have informally promised to each other to work together on several projects, from facilitating the promotion of Italy in Cambodia, and Cambodia in Italy, enhanced connection between travel agents and between tourism associations. Besides cultural and educational collaboration.
Cambodia and Italy share a profound reliance on the tourism sector as a key driver of economic growth and cultural exchange. Each country has a unique identity shaped by history, architecture, and traditions that attract millions of visitors annually.
Cambodia, home to the iconic Angkor Wat and vibrant cultural heritage, sees tourism as a vital pillar for development. Italy, renowned for its art, culinary heritage, and historical landmarks such as the Colosseum and Venice, enjoys its status as one of the most visited countries in the world.
The opportunities to foster inbound and outbound tourism between Cambodia and Italy are promising. Cambodian tourists can benefit from Italy’s diverse offerings, from Renaissance art to scenic landscapes, while Italian travelers can immerse themselves in Cambodia’s ancient temples, warm hospitality, and unique traditions.
To strengthen tourism ties, both countries can collaborate on cultural events, direct flights, and shared promotions in travel expos. Educational tourism could also play a pivotal role, with exchange programs enabling travelers to appreciate each other’s rich histories.
By emphasizing cultural similarities, such as a shared appreciation for art and community traditions, Cambodia and Italy can enhance tourism as a bridge for economic growth and deeper mutual understanding. And it is on this that CATA and ItaCham are committed to work together.
