Giornata dello Spazio (Italian Space Day): Day-1

Saturday 14th December kicked in the 3-days event organized by ItaCham with the lead of Riccardo Corrado, for the celebration of the Italian Space Day.

Every year on December 16th, Italy celebrates the Italian Space Day, a tribute to the country’s remarkable contributions to space exploration and its ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific and technological innovation. This year, 2024, holds special significance as it marks the 60th anniversary of the launch of San Marco 1, Italy’s first satellite, a milestone that made Italy the third country in the world to independently enter space.

The date commemorates the successful launch of San Marco 1 on December 16, 1964. This historic event was a testament to Italy’s pioneering spirit and its dedication to advancing space science. The San Marco project, led by the visionary Luigi Broglio, was a collaborative effort with NASA, but it was Italy’s leadership and ingenuity that made it possible.

Italy’s journey in space exploration is one of innovation, collaboration, and excellence. From its early achievements with the San Marco program to its prominent role in the European Space Agency (ESA), Italy has consistently been at the forefront of space research. Some of the key Italian milestones include:

  • Satellites and Missions: Italy has developed numerous satellites for scientific research, Earth observation, and telecommunications, including COSMO-SkyMed, a constellation renowned for its advanced radar imaging capabilities.

  • International Collaboration: Italy is a key contributor to ESA missions, including Rosetta, which explored Comet 67P, and the ExoMars program, designed to investigate the possibility of life on Mars.

  • Human Spaceflight: Italian astronauts, such as Samantha Cristoforetti, have become global icons, demonstrating Italy’s leadership in space science and technology.

  • Space Technology and Industry: Italian companies are at the cutting edge of space technology, producing components for the International Space Station and contributing to global space infrastructure.

Furthermore, this Italian Space Day in Cambodia wants to take on a unique cultural dimension with the theme of the Apsara, the celestial nymph from Khmer mythology. The Apsara, a symbol of grace, beauty, and connection to the heavens, perfectly aligns with the concept of space exploration—a quest to understand the mysteries of the cosmos and our place within it.

Additionally, the choice of this theme highlights the profound parallels between Italy and Cambodia: two nations with rich histories, deep cultural heritage, and a shared vision of innovation. By linking the Apsara, a celestial figure, with the exploration of celestial bodies, this event underscores the universal nature of humanity’s aspirations and the power of cultural exchange to inspire new frontiers of collaboration.

To be noted that the Italian Space Day is being celebrated for the first time in Cambodia, marking a historic moment for both nations. This event not only honors Italy’s achievements in space but also serves as a bridge connecting the cultural heritage of Italy and Cambodia through the lens of space exploration. It is a celebration of science, art, and the shared human desire to explore the unknown. Through this initiative, the event aims to inspire young minds, foster international cooperation, and highlight the role of space as a unifying force that transcends borders and cultures.

To add to the event, and through the collaboration with the Angkor Art Gallery, two paintings with the Space Apsara theme were specifically created for this special event, and are now in auction at the venue, CamEd Business School. Part of the proceedings will be donated to Il Nodo. Il Nodo (The Knot) is an NGO, founded by an Italian, Martina Cannetta, that supports young Cambodians by a life design mission. Il Nodo’s goal is to improve Cambodian present circumstances, but above all, to give them the tools and skills needed to enhance their futures: “life design”. Il Nodo, in fact, offers high-level training on jewelry craftsmanship, connecting the heritage of Cambodia skills in jewelry design, with the creativity and know-how of Italian craftsmen.

As we celebrate 60 years since Italy’s first satellite and reflect on its legacy in space exploration, Italian Space Day reminds us of the importance of dreaming big and working together to achieve the extraordinary. By connecting the celestial aspirations of the Apsara with the pioneering spirit of Italy, this event not only commemorates the past but also looks forward to a future where space continues to unite and inspire us all.

But mostly, the event wants to further connect Italy and Cambodia, through culture, science and technology, fostering collaborative opportunities, investments and pushing the development of the Kingdom of Cambodia, with the supportive friendship of Italy. Time to celebrate la Giornata Nazionale dello Spazio, with the timeless grace and spiritual essence of Cambodia’s Apsara, her ethereal dance weaving stories of divine beauty, cultural pride, and the enduring legacy of Angkor. This year in space with Italy.
